Lieutenant General KK Nanda was commissioned in December 1949 into the Regiment of Artillery. He is a graduate of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington and the National Defence College, New Delhi. In 1971 he was promoted to the rank of a Brigadier and took over the command of 161 Infantry Brigade in the Kashmir Valley. He fought the Indo-Pak War of 1971 with this formation successfully.
In 1978 he was promoted to the rank of a Major General and commanded an Infantry Division in Rajasthan. In 1984 he was promoted again and appointed Chief of Staff, Central Command, Lucknow, in the rank of a Lieutenant General. He retired from there in 1987. During this period he was also the Colonel Commandant of Remounts and Veterinary Corps.
Actively associated with Think Tank of various reputed socio-cultural organization. A prolific writer, has several books to his credit.
दिसंबर 1949 में ले. जनरल के. के. नंदा को तोपखाना (आर्टिलरी) रेजीमेंट में कमीशन मिली। जून 1958 में आप पंजाब के राज्यपात के ए. डी. सी. नियुक्त किए गए। सन् 1960 में डिफेंस सर्विसेस स्टाफ कॉलेज, वेलिंगटन में कोर्स करने के लिए गए और स्नातक उत्तीर्ण किया। बाद में उसी कॉलेज में सन् 1969 से 1971 तक प्रशिक्षण दिया। यहीं से ही आप जनरल कैडर में चुने गए और ब्रिगेडियर के रूप में पदोन्नति के साथ कश्मीर में 161 इंफैंट्री डिवीजन के कमांडर नियुक्त किए गए। सन् 1974 में नेशनल डिफेंस कॉलेज, नई दिल्ली से स्नातक की उपाधि लेने के बाद आपने सेना मुख्यालय में कार्य किया। सन् 1978 में आपको मेजर जनरल का ओहदा प्राप्त हुआ तथा आपने राजस्थान में इंफैंट्री डिवीजन की कमान सँभाली। सन् 1981 में आपकी पोस्टिंग हुई और एक कोर, जो पूर्व में थी, उसके चीफ ऑफ स्टाफ नियुक्त किए गए। सन् 1983 में वहीं से डिप्टी क्वार्टर मास्टर जनरल के रूप में सेना मुख्यालय लौटे। सन् 1984 में आपको ले. जनरल के रैंक में पदोन्नति देकर सेंट्रल कमांड के चीफ ऑफ स्टाफ पद नियुक्त किया गया। इसी प्रतिष्ठित पद से आप सन् 1987 में सेवानिवृत्त हुए। आप सन् 1994 से 1999 तक श्यामाप्रसाद मुखर्जी महिला कॉलेज, नई दिल्ली के शासीनिकाय के चेयरमैन रह चुके हैं।
