Born in a remote village on the sea in Odisha in 1934, Manoj Das has travelled not a very short way through vicissitudes of life, standing a helpless witness to a devastating famine accompanied by epidemics sweeping away innumerable familiar faces and his affluent house being plundered twice by brutal gangs of bandits. Turning into a radical youth leader in his college days, courting jail, playing a role in the Afro-Asian Students’ Conference at Bandung in 1956, he ultimately became a student of mysticism.
His first book in his mother-tongue getting published when he was fourteen, he is an author “whose writings have enchanted a long range of readers, from the village boys to Graham Greene” as the Ravenshaw University citation read while conferring on him D.Litt. (Honoris Causa). The numerous accolades he has received include the country’s national recognition—the Sahitya Akademi Award—the most prestigious Saraswati Samman, the Padma Award and D.Litt. from about half a dozen universities.
उड़ीसा के एक समुद्रतटीय गाँव में सन् 1934 में जनमे मनोज दास ग्राम्य लोक और प्राकृतिक वैभव के बीच पले-बढ़े। शहर में पढ़ाई के दौरान अनायास लेखन की ओर प्रवृत्त हुए और उडि़या में पहला कविता संग्रह ‘शताब्दीर आर्तनाद’ प्रकाशित हुआ, तब इनकी उम्र मात्र चौदह वर्ष थी। पंद्रह वर्ष की अवस्था में ‘दिगंत’ की शुरुआत की, जो आगे चलकर राज्य की एक विशिष्ट पत्रिका के रूप में प्रतिष्ठित हुई।
अंग्रेजी में लगभग 40 पुस्तकें प्रकाशित हैं तथा इतनी ही पुस्तकें मातृभाषा उडि़या में भी। उपन्यास ‘साइक्लोंस’, ‘श्रीअरविंदो इन द फर्स्ट डिकेड ऑफ द सेंचुरी’ एवं ‘श्रीअरविंदो’ प्रसिद्ध रचनाएँ हैं। इनके अलावा बाल साहित्य की विपुल मात्रा में रचना की है। दैनिक समाचार-पत्रों में नियमित रूप से स्तंभ-लेखन भी करते रहे हैं। सृजनात्मक लेखन के लिए भारत के राष्ट्रीय पुरस्कार, साहित्य अकादेमी पुरस्कार, उडि़या साहित्य अकादेमी पुरस्कार (दो बार) सहित अन्य अनेक पुरस्कार-सम्मानों से विभूषित किया जा चुका है।
भारत के राष्ट्रपति ने इन्हें ‘पद्मश्री’ अलंकरण से विभूषित किया; प्रतिष्ठित ‘सरस्वती सम्मान’ के साथ-साथ साहित्य अकादेमी की महत्तर सदस्यता से भी सम्मानित किए गए।
