Began life as a Civil Engineer. He subsequently joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and rose to be the state President of the party for West Bengal, and is currently a member of the BJP National Executive, the party’s highest policy making body. His principal interest was however, always in intellectual pursuits; and he wrote and was published extensively, both in English and in his native Bengali. His book A Suppressed Chapter in History, published in 2007 (earlier published under a different title) describing the exodus of Hindus from East Pakistan and Bangladesh, won acclaim, and is one of the very few documentations in English on the subject. The current book is about a person he has admired all his life, and it gave him great satisfaction to write it. Tathagata Roy is 66, married, with two married daughters, and has lived most of his life in Kolkata.
तथागत राय के कॅरियर की शुरुआत एक सिविल इंजीनियर के रूप में हुई। आगे चलकर वे भारतीय जनता पार्टी में शामिल हुए और पश्चिम बंगाल के प्रदेश अध्यक्ष बने। वर्तमान में भाजपा राष्ट्रीय कार्यकारिणी के सदस्य हैं। उन्होंने अंग्रेजी और अपनी मातृ-भाषा बाँग्ला में काफी कुछ लिखा है, जो प्रकाशित भी हुआ है। सन् 2007 में प्रकाशित उनकी पुस्तक ‘ए सप्रेस्ड चैप्टर इन हिस्ट्री’ को अपार प्रसिद्धि मिली, जिसमें हिंदुओं के पूर्वी पाकिस्तान और बाँग्लादेश से पलायन करने का वर्णन है, और इस विषय पर यह अंग्रेजी में लिखी गई गिनी-चुनी पुस्तकों में से एक है। 66 वर्षीय तथागतजी की दो बेटियाँ हैं और उनक अधिकांश जीवन कोलकाता में बीता है।
